Rules of Basic Blackjack Strategy
The Basic Blackjack strategy rules can be applied practically to all of the numerous variations of the game.
Card Values:
- All the numbered cards (2-10) are valued according to the number of the card.
- All the face cards (Jacks, Queens, Kings) are counted as 10.
- Ace counts as 1 or 11 regarding the hand total. (hands that count Ace as 11 are called Soft Hands, and hands that count Ace as 1 or do not have Aces at all are called Hard Hands).
Common Basic Blackjack Strategy Rules rules:
- Always stand on 17 or higher
- Always hit on 12-16 against dealer 7 or higher
- Always hit on your 8 or less.
Doubling Down Basic Blackjack Strategy Rules:
- Always DD on 11 except against dealer Ace
- DD on 10 against dealer 6 or less
- DD on 9 against dealer 6 or less
Soft Hands Basic Blackjack Strategy Rules:
- Always stand on soft 19/20.
- Always DD on soft 13-18 against dealer 4, 5, 6.
Splitting Basic Blackjack Strategy Rules:
- Always split Aces and 8's
- Never split 10-valued cards and two 5's
- Always split 3's and 2's against dealer 4, 5, 6, or 7
